Following a Class Q permission, which secured the principle of the conversion of the existing barn into a residential dwelling, we were engaged to design a new family home for our clients.
Situated on the family farm near the woodlands of Tehidy Country Park, it was important that the new building would be a welcome addition to the farmstead, honouring its location and the original barn, which was previously used as a lambing shed.
Our clients, a young active family with a host of pets, wanted their home to suit their outdoor lifestyle, with an essential part of the brief being that indoor living spaces were well connected to the garden. We achieved this by arranging living areas that lead to sheltered courtyards, allowing for outdoor play and dining, important to their family life. Furthermore, a mostly open plan ground floor with zoned spaces maintains connections for dining, relaxing and children’s play, whilst a tucked away snug provides a quiet grown-ups space or cinema room for family movie nights.
On the first floor are two children’s bedrooms and a family bathroom, a principal master bedroom, ensuite, and luxurious dressing room. The master bedroom also benefits from a small terrace, offering beautiful Cornish countryside views.
For the external appearance our clients wanted a dynamic & modern look that still considered the buildings rural past. Steel corrugated roofing sheets and blackened vertical timber cladding reinforce the building’s form, whilst giving a firm nod to the surrounding agricultural building vernacular.

DART were superb from start to finish… Sarah took the time to really listen to what we wanted from the house and incorporated various elements of design we had seen into the overall plan. She had great suggestions and ideas and wasn’t afraid to revisit something if we didn’t like it. DART had links to other professionals which helped the build to run smoothly also. The whole team have been fantastic and I would highly recommend DART to anyone about to embark on their own self build adventure!
