A narrow, steep site and an abandoned farmhouse is what we started with on this self-build design journey. An ambitious brief from our clients, they are now onsite and building their beautiful family home.
The site topography informed a traditional ‘long barn’ form, with the ground floor plan mirroring the changing levels of the site. From a lower-level entrance, this ascends into an open plan living area, where carefully positioned glazing frames rural views. The first floor on one level contains three double bedrooms and a master suite at one end, with a large outside terrace overlooking the rear garden and fields to the east.
The design ultimately takes on two opposing elevations. One side faces the country access lane and has smaller first floor windows that pick out the dense oaks, giving an overall sense of protection immersed in the tree canopy. In contrast, the other side of the building is open and light, embracing the garden and countryside beyond.
A sensitive and in many ways constrained site, we worked with ecology & landscaping consultants to have the smallest impact whilst also delivering a beautiful family home.
